The story of Gail Harris is a bittersweet one and difficult to tell.
She has allowed life to get the better of her, yet because of her absolutely amazing God given gift, there are many videos and posts of her alter ego “Radio” who sings her heart out on Skid Row Downtown Los Angeles, California. Several videos have topped over one million streams.
But her blossoming began in Youngstown, Ohio. Firstly, in the Pentecostal Church as a little girl alongside her sisters, setting congregations on fire. Years later, in the basement of Chocolate Pulse Studio, she stretched out her songwriting and harmonic skills into the stratosphere.
Never without an idea, her imagination remained on overload. We never shut the recorder off when Gail was in the room.
We worked night and day from 1993 through 1995, when she decided to leave for L.A., literally recording the vocal tracks to “(In My) Mirror” with the U-Haul sitting on the street. She did two takes and was off, out and gone.
She returned to Youngstown in 06 and we had an opportunity to re-record “(It's A) Shame,” “Be Real Wit' Me” and the effervescent “Tightrope.”
This one was the most difficult to let go of, because she held on to it with a tight fist. We knew the knew the power of this song. She knew the pain. When we arrived at Listen Studios to drop her voice, no one expected the incredible essence which poured out of her that evening. I still had a loose arrangement I was working through, but she rode that skeleton like it was a stallion! Two takes. That's always it with her. The second one is only a ‘safety’ because she always kills the first.
There are more songs in the vault. My heart is that as we continue to release these treasures, the magnificence of this music reawakens who Gail truly is and before either of us leaves this world, another opportunity comes again to build again…This is my prayer.
